New vs used truck: which pays back faster?

A used truck costs less and has a smaller EMI, so it must be the safer buy. Sometimes it is. This guide compares one new truck with two used ones and shows the three numbers that actually decide it.

In short

  • Compare trucks on monthly cash after the EMI, not on price or EMI alone.
  • Three things decide it: mileage, maintenance per km and days off the road.
  • In our example, a tired used truck leaves ₹7,991 a month, a new one ₹25,259, and a well-kept used one ₹39,143.
  • The used truck's condition matters more than its price. Check the records before you buy.

The three trucks

All three do the same work: 1,000 km round trips, 750 km loaded, earning ₹52,000 of freight per trip. Tolls (₹6,000), driver allowance (₹3,000) and loading (₹500) are the same for each. Diesel is ₹90 a litre. Everything else differs. These are illustrative assumptions: real prices, rates and conditions vary a lot.

NewUsed, tiredUsed, well kept
Price / down payment₹36 lakh / ₹6 lakh₹20 lakh / ₹5 lakh₹20 lakh / ₹5 lakh
Loan₹30 lakh, 10%, 5 yrs₹15 lakh, 13%, 4 yrs₹15 lakh, 13%, 4 yrs
EMI₹63,741₹40,241₹40,241
Average mileage4.0 km/l3.7 km/l3.9 km/l
Tyres and maintenance₹3/km₹5/km₹4/km
Trips a month (downtime)878
Fixed costs a month₹47,000₹44,000₹44,000

Used trucks often attract a higher loan rate, and insuring an older truck usually costs less. The example reflects both, but get real quotes for any truck you're considering.

Step 1: Contribution per trip

Worked example: one trip in each truck
New: diesel ₹22,500 + wear ₹3,000 + ₹9,500 other₹35,000
Contribution: ₹52,000 − ₹35,000₹17,000
Used, tired: diesel ₹24,324 + wear ₹5,000 + ₹9,500₹38,824
Contribution: ₹52,000 − ₹38,824₹13,176
Used, well kept: diesel ₹23,077 + wear ₹4,000 + ₹9,500₹36,577
Contribution: ₹52,000 − ₹36,577₹15,423

Diesel alone is ₹1,824 more per trip in the tired truck. Worse mileage (3.7 vs 4.0 km/l) costs more than most people expect. Our diesel cost guide shows how to measure it.

Step 2: Cash after the EMI each month

Worked example: one month
New: 8 × ₹17,000₹1,36,000
− fixed ₹47,000 − EMI ₹63,741− ₹1,10,741
Cash left₹25,259
Used, tired: 7 × ₹13,176₹92,232
− fixed ₹44,000 − EMI ₹40,241− ₹84,241
Cash left₹7,991
Used, well kept: 8 × ₹15,423₹1,23,384
− fixed ₹44,000 − EMI ₹40,241− ₹84,241
Cash left₹39,143

The tired used truck has an EMI ₹23,500 lower than the new one, yet leaves ₹17,268 less cash each month. The extra diesel, the extra repairs and the lost trip cost more than the EMI saves.

The well-kept used truck is a different story. Same price, same loan, but because it runs almost as well as the new truck, it leaves the most cash of all three.

Step 3: How long to earn back the down payment?

Months to recover down payment = down payment ÷ monthly cash left

TruckDown paymentCash a monthMonths to recover
New₹6,00,000₹25,259about 24
Used, tired₹5,00,000₹7,991about 63
Used, well kept₹5,00,000₹39,143about 13

This is a simple payback check. It ignores the owner's pay, tax and what each truck is worth at the end. A new truck usually keeps more value, and the used loan here is paid off a year sooner. Look at those too before deciding, but if the monthly cash is thin, the rest rarely saves the deal.

Watch out: the tired used truck needs 7 trips to cover fixed costs and the EMI (₹84,241 ÷ ₹13,176 = 6.4), and it can only do 7. One extra breakdown day and the month runs at a loss. The new truck needs 7 of its 8 possible trips, which leaves a little slack.

What to check before buying a used truck

Then put your estimates into the comparison. The right answer depends on the specific truck, not on "new" or "used".

Run it with your own numbers

FleetProfit compares ownership and finance options side by side: EMI, interest, depreciation and the cash each option leaves, with the working shown on every line.

Common questions

Is a used truck always cheaper to run?

No. It's cheaper to buy and usually has a smaller EMI, but lower mileage, higher maintenance and more days off the road can cost more each month than the EMI saves.

What should I check before buying a used truck?

Service and repair records, tyre condition, odometer history, accident and insurance claim history, loan and ownership status, permits, and a mechanic's inspection. Then ask the seller for fuel records to estimate real mileage.

Why is the interest rate higher on a used truck loan?

Lenders generally see older vehicles as riskier security, so rates and terms are often less favourable. Get actual quotes for the specific truck before comparing.
